Cyrus Shepard's journal records an 1834 trip from Massachusetts to Oregon by way of Independence, Fort Hall, and Vancouver (WA MSS 421). The letter, written from the Willamette mission to a church colleague, reports on the children at the school and mentions Henry Harmon Spalding and Jason Lee (WA MSS 422).

Reverend Jason Lee, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born on June 28, 1803 in Stanstead, Quebec. After his ordination in 1834, Jason Lee and his nephew, Daniel Lee, journeyed overland to Oregon to serve the Flathead Indians. Reverend Daniel Lee, pioneer Methodist missionary, was born on July 1, 1806 in Stanstead, Quebec. Following his ordination in 1834, Daniel traveled overland to Oregon with his uncle, Jason Lee. Philip Leget Edwards was born in Kentucky on 14 July 1812. In about 1824, he and his family moved to Old Franklin, Missouri.
